박사과정에서 과학사를 전공하고 있다. 연세대학교 철학과를 졸업했고, 서울대학교 과학사 및 과학철학 협동과정(現 과학학과)에서 영국의 사이버네틱스 이론가이자 발명가·예술가·기업가인 고든 파스크(Gordon Pask)의 작업에 나타난 감각의 모티프에 관한 연구로 석사 학위를 받았다. 지금은 컴퓨터 비전(computer vision)의 초기 역사를 통해 시각적 지각에 관한 새로운 이해가 냉전 미국의 맥락 안에서 어떻게 형성되었는지를 다루는 박사 학위논문을 준비하고 있다. 과학과 기술의 영역에서 물질과 관념이 어떤 방식으로 상호작용하는가에 관심을 두고 공부하고 있다. 물질과 관념 사이 매개항으로서의 감각과 감응에 대해서도 주목하고 있다. 같은 맥락에서 인지과학·인공지능·사이버네틱스의 역사에 관한 구체적 논의를 작업의 한 축으로, 또 신유물론, 포스트휴머니즘, 감각 및 매체 이론 등에 관한 이론적 논의를 작업의 다른 축으로 삼고 있다.

After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy at Yonsei University, Sokion Choi received a Master of Science degree at the Program in History and Philosophy of Science at Seoul National University, which is the predecessor of the Department of Science Studies, with a thesis on British cybernetician Gordon Pask. Now he is working on the doctoral project on the early history of computer vision, in which the “algorithmic” understanding of visual perception arose within the context of the Cold War United States of America. His works focus on the histories of cybernetics, cognitive sciences, and artificial intelligence, as well as the philosophical accounts on new materialism, posthumanism, and media aesthetics.
