현재환 교수는 동아시아 맥락에서 한국 근현대 과학기술의 초국적 역사를 연구하는 과학사학자이다. 한양대학교에서 역사학, 철학, 과학기술학을 공부하고 서울대학교 과학사 및 과학철학 협동과정에서 석·박사 학위를 받았으며, UCLA 사회와 유전학 연구소 방문연구생, 도쿄이과대학 공학부 일한문화교류기금 박사후연구원, 막스플랑크 과학사연구소 박사후연구원을 지냈다. 이후 부산대학교 교양교육원 조·부교수와 한양대학교 철학과 부교수를 거쳐, 2026년 9월부터 서울대학교 학부대학 및 과학학과 부교수로 재직하고 있다. 2016년 한국과학사학회 논문상, 2023년 국제동아시아과학기술의학사학회(ISHEASTM) 주커전 상(Zhu Kezhen Award)을 수상했다. 한국과학사학회 학술이사를 거쳐 총무이사로 활동 중이며, 아시아환경사학회(AAEH) 이사, 국제과학기술사철학연합 과학기술사분과(IUHPST/DHST) 과학기술외교위원회 홍보이사, 미국과학사학회(HSS) 멤버십 위원, 국제학술지 EASTS 서평 편집위원, 《과학기술학연구》 편집위원 등을 맡고 있다.
